Replacing the Belden G. Bly Bascule Drawbridge

The Measurement & Alignment of the Belden G Bly Bascule Drawbridge (Saugus River)

Project Description

The primary objective of this project (which was awarded to our customer SPS New England) was to build a new bascule movable bridge called the Belden G. Bly Bridge, replacing the original 1912 bridge, which will be demolished. The new bridge is situated in the same location, just west of the existing temporary bridge. In addition to the new bridge, the project includes the construction of new approach bridge spans and the reconstruction of the roadway approaches. The project is expected to be completed by March 2026. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $99.3 million.

The Challenges

Working outside so equipment exposed to weather changes

Thermal drift due to changing weather

Live construction site with crane and pile driver causing vibration and drift issues

Precarious set-up due to all the exposed rebar, welding and concrete pours causing slight drift to our control network

Site constantly changing as each level was built up with each concrete pour

Safety issues due to working close to edge of water
