Using Metrology Terminology

The Disconnect When Using Metrology Terminology

Have you ever googled something and quickly realize your results are not providing you with anything resembling what you want? We often google what we know to find answers to all sorts of questions whether it is in our personal life or inside our employer’s walls. The same concept applies across the board, even in the metrology field.

When it comes to Metrology, there is an incredible disconnect between the specific terminology used by our customers and the broad terminology among industry professionals. In addition to the terminology, there is also a large disconnect between what our customers are asking for and what we know they need. This creates an invisible wall between metrology service organizations and prospective customers. Why? Because we may advertise on our website that we provide laser tracker services or CMM measurement programming and a customer could simply google “taking measurements of an aircraft fuselage.” As a metrology service provider we try to stay broader in our terminology to grasp a larger concept of the industry offerings whereas a customer is more likely to google their specific measurement challenge or application. If your search does not include specific industry terms, you may find your search results lacking companies with the capabilities you desire.

Things to keep in mind before you search:

  1. Include “Service” in your Search – If you need a specific aircraft part measured, begin by simply googling “aircraft measurement services” or “metrology services for the aerospace industry.” This will provide you with a larger list of service providers instead of a variety of articles that companies have written revolving around the aerospace industry. If you are looking specifically for a service provider, it is important you specify that in your search.
  2. Use Mainstream Industry Terminology – You say “3D Scanning of Building”, we say “Architectural Surveying.” You say “Laser Scanning”, but may mean high precision “Laser Tracking.” Make sure you are using the proper terminology when performing your searches or you may find yourself lacking the desired results.
  3. Keep Your End Result in Mind – You may know what you need to accomplish as your end result, but leave it to the professionals to advise you on how to achieve those results. Don’t try to search for the specific piece of equipment you think you need to do the job, search for the service that provides the type of work you need done first, then by speaking to the professionals, you will be advised which piece of equipment will provide you with those results. This is the best route whether you are looking to purchase your own piece of equipment or simply look for someone to do the work for you. Metrology service providers are consultants first and foremost and we are here to help you!
