ECM Field Services uses state-of-the-art laser scanners to provide solutions that deliver an advanced data collection technique. These laser scanners can collect massive amounts of data in a high accurate 3D point cloud. The ability to combine surveying and scanning technology gives ECM the advantage. The accuracy and repeatability achieved through this method allows ECM engineers to model both large and small objects with the highest resolution.
3D MODELING & SURVEYING
ECM LAUNCHES NEW 3D SURVEYING DIVISION
Reverse Engineering a mechanical component requires an accurate 3D measurement with enough detail for it to be reproduced into a CAD model. At ECM our varying technology can digitize large and small objects with speed and accuracy. The captured data points are used to create a digital model within a reverse engineering software solution.
ECM has the experience, skills, and equipment to create highly accurate CAD models and drawings. ECM’s design staff routinely makes 3D CAD models for Reverse Engineering jobs. We’ve completed work for customers in aerospace, automotive, power generation, medical, to name a few. Our designers are experts in modeling standard 2D & 3D part features, as well as complex surfaces. We provide files in all formats and levels of detail. ECM can also create manufacturing drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5-2009 specifications. All of our engineers are trained experts in GD & T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
The RE process starts with a complete measurement of the original part. After reviewing part size and accuracy requirements, ECM’s engineering and inspection teams select the appropriate measurement tools. For scanning parts with contours and complex shapes, the job is matched to the appropriately sized scanning equipment. ECM uses instruments such as PCMM Arms, Laser Trackers, Handheld and Terrestrial Laser Scanners, Blue Light Technology and Total Stations. Our in house metrology lab includes array of equipment such as Programmable CMMs, Touch Probing Articulated Arms, Vision Systems, Optical Comparator, Interferometers and various other inspection instruments. All of our equipment is calibrated per ISO/IEC 17025 specifications and traceable to national standards.
Once the legacy part has been measured, ECM prepares the data for import into the 3D CAD package of your choice. We have the most current software available for seamless and native data transfer. With thorough and careful modeling practices, our designers create exacting models matching the measured data. Our designers are extremely diligent comparing the scanned data to the CAD model to verify accuracy. After the models are verified, the files are saved in the desired format. Drawings can then be prepared from these 3D CAD models.
Using a combination of laser trackers, total stations, and terrestrial laser scanners, ECM Field Services is able to capture data for large-scale projects with unrivaled accuracy and simplicity. Large and small, engineering and architectural projects are what we do on a day-to-day basis. Below are just a few samples of the industries that we work within.
There are several benefits to utilizing laser scanning technology when it comes to building information modeling or management, commonly referred to as BIM.
The 3D terrestrial scanners used by ECM take digital images of their surroundings while scanning millions of points with extreme accuracy. These digital images are a true representation or records of the existing as-built conditions. Three dimensional modeling and animated walk-through videos can be created to emphasize key characteristics of as-built conditions. Popular applications of BIM include interior scans of equipment and facility layouts as well as large-scale infrastructure projects and shipyard applications.

Using BIM, ECM can help customers by providing point cloud and model-based solutions to used to plan, design, construct and manage building infrastructure. Building Information Modeling is changing how plants and assembly lines are planned, built, and managed.
This service is new to many of our customers, but once introduced you will wonder how you existed without it!
Our laser scanning services create accurate modeling of monuments, buildings or landscapes for documentation and analysis purposes.
Our services provide fast and efficient 3D documentation of historically valued objects with extreme accuracy. Art, Stone and Sculpture are perfect for laser scanning replication.
Documentation of historical buildings, archaeological and rebuilt sites will be just a few of the advantages of terrestrial scanning.
Creating new plans or modifying existing structures will be easier with 3D data of site and facility.

- As-built point cloud model
- Mass cross sections
- Site Work
Documentation of as-built conditions of industrial production and manufacturing facilities for example; pulp and paper, petrochemical, chemical, steel industry, shipbuilding, car and food industry rebuilds.

One of the fastest growing fields for terrestrial scanning; forensic data collection is being used for capturing data for accident and crime scenes.
3D visualizations can bring the scene to life during the time of investigation or months and even years later. The laser will capture indoor and outdoor environments to help CSI teams replicate the scene when they get back to the office, or even in a courtroom presentation.
Laser Scanning and the creation of legacy as-built data is the future for facility maintenance and asset management.
By having 3D documentation of your facility you are able to define and plan for future modifications and growth. The ability to “see” a 3D image of your facility from a remote location will prove to be a management process you will not be able to live without.
Through the use of innovative software techniques, ECM can create walk through videos and part placement instructions based on scanned data clouds. Imagine that you are replacing a generator in a building that is 20 years old. ECM can scan the building and illustrate your generator as it moves through the building to its final location. Interference and obstruction can be predetermined prior to project start. Projects like this have proven invaluable to our customers.
